Why the Ascendant needs an exact time

The rising sign rotates through the whole zodiac in a day — roughly one degree every four minutes. Planets barely move in that time, but the Ascendant does, so a rough time gives a rough rising sign. If you don’t know your time, we’ll tell you rather than guess.

Questions people ask

What is a rising sign?
It’s the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born — the cusp of the first house. It sets the whole house framework of the chart.
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably — it changes about every two hours. Without a time we compute everything that doesn’t depend on it and skip the Ascendant rather than inventing one.
Is the rising sign the same as my sun sign?
No. Your sun sign is where the Sun was; your rising sign is which sign was on the horizon. They’re often different.
