Astrologers read the Ascendant as your outward style and the chart's anchor point — the sign on the eastern horizon at birth, which is why it needs an accurate time.
The explanation
The Ascendant, or Rising sign, is the zodiac sign climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Astrologers treat it as your outward style — the first impression you give and the lens through which you meet the world — and as the chart's starting point, the cusp of the first house that sets where every other house falls. Because the horizon shifts roughly one sign every two hours, the Ascendant needs an accurate birth time to pin down. Where the Sun points to a core identity and the Moon to inner needs, the Rising adds the manner in which both show up. Hold it as a theme of self-presentation to notice, not a label to wear.
