Mercury is the chart's mind — how you sort information, learn, and put things into words. Its sign points to a style of thinking, never a rank of intelligence.

The explanation

Named for the swift messenger, Mercury stands for the thinking mind: how you take in information, make sense of it, and hand it back as speech or writing. Astrologers read Mercury's sign as the flavour of that process — some signs think fast and out loud, others turn an idea over slowly before a word escapes. Traditionally this is a description of style, not a score; no placement makes anyone smarter or duller. Knowing your Mercury sign can help you name how you naturally learn and where a different pace might frustrate you.
