Applying and separating

THE THESIS
An applying aspect is tightening toward exact and reads as building; a separating one is loosening and settling. This is flavour, tradition holds, not a countdown.
The explanation
Because planets keep moving, an aspect is either tightening toward exact or drifting away from it. Astrologers call the first one applying and the second separating. An applying aspect carries a building flavour — the two planets are still closing in, so tradition reads it as gathering energy. A separating aspect feels more settled, like a conversation that has already made its point and is easing off. Neither is a countdown to a fixed event. This is a matter of texture, not fate: whether a theme is ripening or mellowing right now. Knowing the difference just adds nuance to how you read a connection, and what you do with it stays yours.
